BRUNSWICK, GA (AP) -
An archeologist says newly identified graves in Brunswick date back the late 18th century.
Brunswick City Manager Bill Weeks told The Florida Times-Union that the graves were found Thursday in the city's history district where a middle school previously stood. City crews used a front-end loader to unearth them.
Archaeologist Fred Cook said he dated the graves to the late 1700s. He said an early Brunswick settler, Benjamin Hart, is reportedly buried in the cemetery.
The cemetery was situated on the eastern edge of the small community. As the town grew, it subsumed the cemetery, leaving it forgotten.
