Gun discovered hidden in children's hospital ER

ATLANTA (AP) -

Authorities are trying to figure out why a loaded handgun was hidden in the emergency room of Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Hughes Spalding.

Police tell The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that the .40-caliber Glock handgun had two fully loaded clips. It was discovered early Monday morning by a cleaning employee, as she changed trash bags in a bathroom in the E.R. Police say the weapon had been placed between the bag and the trash can.

Children's Healthcare spokeswoman Patty Gregory says the hospital has increased its security presence and now has a security officer in the emergency department.

Atlanta police spokesman Curtis Davenport said investigators are still gathering evidence as to who may have left the gun there -- and why.
