Parents, police worried about dangerous game involving cars and students

DUNWOODY, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -

It's the end of the school day at Chestnut Elementary and Peachtree Middle School, and that means there is a heavy dose of traffic and kids on North Peachtree Road.

"It's crazy. It's really crazy," said Melissa Marion-Landais, a parent.

Marion-Landais says it is dangerous during the morning and afternoon.

"We actually had a girl be grazed by a car in the crosswalk holding her mother's hand," Marion-Landais said.

Dunwoody police patrol the area looking for speeders, but now they are looking for kids horsing around and/or playing chicken near the road.

"I've seen them all pushing each other and once, someone almost ended up in the middle of the road," said Rachel Ries, a student at Chestnut Elementary.

Ries says the kids she saw go to her school.

"Danzel was almost in the middle of the street," Ries said.

Police have investigated at least two instances involving kids playing near North Peachtree Road. One case they say involved students from Peachtree Middle School.

"I don't think that is very safe, maybe you should be more safe in the road. You could get hit," said Ries.

"That makes me nervous. That is not good for the motorist or the kids," said Rebecca Ries, Rachael Ries' mother.

Police are asking motorists to slow down and be aware, but parents say kids have responsibilities as well.

"If we are asking drivers to be more careful and be aware, then kids have to step up to and not do crazy things," said Marion-Landais.
