ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -
It was a frantic search for some newborn kittens that forced the city of Atlanta's Department of Watershed Management to take action.
Workers decided the best way to get the cats out of the storm drain, at 551 Thurmond St. Northwest, was to use a mobile camera rover to scare them out.
"We are just going to lower it down and see if the cats will come out the other end," Quinton Clarke said.
Residents who live near the sewer said that a black cat had babies recently and the kittens wandered into the sewer.
"My wife called the fire department, animal control, but the only people to do something was the city of Atlanta," Jim White said. "I'm amazed and shocked they are out here doing all this for the cats, hopefully they find them."
After searching for more than two hours, workers realized that the cats that were seen in the sewer must have gone deeper underground. Despite multiple sweeps with the camera down the drain, the cats were not found.
"We can't do anything now because we don't know where they are at," Paul Richards, a city worker said.
Residents said if they see the cats in the sewer again, they will call the city and hopefully next time crews will be able to pull the kittens out.
