ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -
Officials at the Atlanta Humane Society on Howell Mill Road hope people will be able to quickly adopt several dozen dogs and cats rescued from the flood-ravaged Gulf Coast last week.
When Hurricane Isaac helped cause major flooding across southern Louisiana, many shelters had to evacuate their animals. The shelter in Saint John's Parish sent 35 dogs and 16 cats north to Atlanta last week.
"It was most of the animals the shelter had out there," said Andrea Peacock with the Atlanta Humane Society. Peacock personally made two trips to the Gulf Coast to pick up separate loads of animals and bring them back to Atlanta.
"It's not overwhelming, but it definitely keeps us full," she said of the 51 new animals for which they're now trying to find homes.
She said most of the animals have been spayed and neutered, so they will be ready for adoption later this week.
