DeKalb School Board will answer to accrediting agency

STONE MOUNTAIN, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -

The DeKalb School Board formally accepted a letter from its accrediting agent on Wednesday that put the district on notice for potential governing violations.

The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) sent a letter to the district that said it received complaints about the board's governing and leadership policies and financial management.

"SACS is not accusing us of anything," said School Board Chairman Eugene Walker.  "Let's make sure we make that clear.  SACS is responding to allegations by people we do not know that feel we have not acted properly in some ways."

Among the complaints is an allegation the board failed to be "good stewards of the school system's financial resources for at least the past five years," SACS said in the letter to the district.

Another concern was that the board interfered with the school system's day-to-day operations.

Walker said he was confident the board will prove it has not violated policies or procedures and has properly managed the budget.

"We have not done, in my opinion, any of those outlandish things," said Walker.

The district has 30 days to respond to SACS's concerns outlined in its letter dated Aug. 28.
