Condo Association wants historic Buckhead home demolished

FULTON COUNTY, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -

The Randolph-Lucas home has been sitting at 2500 Peachtree Rd. for several years in front of a condominium complex.

The Condo Association would like to see the home moved, but preservationists worry that it will be torn down.

"We'd like someone to come forward and move it," President of the Buckhead Heritage Society Wright Mitchell said.

Mitchell said he's looking for someone to step up and save this historical home in Buckhead. The home was moved a few feet forward about 12 years ago when the condos were being built behind it.

"This is a piece of Atlanta history that is on the verge of being torn down," Mitchell said.

Mitchell said the home was built in 1924 for Hollins Randolph, the great, great grandson of Thomas Jefferson. Later, Margaret Lucas, a well-known entertainer, who lived in the home, had lavish parties in the dwelling, but for years now the home has sat empty, almost out of place in front of a condominium complex.

"The Condo Association has filed an application for demolition of this structure as an unsafe building. They've got a report from an engineer that says it's unsafe. So we filed that application with the city and that's pending," Condo Association attorney Hakim Hilliard said.

Hilliard said the city rejected the Condo Association's first request for a demolition permit. They've since appealed and they're confident demolition is inevitable.

"Because we consider the building to be unsafe we think it's a liability issue just to let it sit here forever, based on our engineering report," Hilliard said.

The Condo Association is willing to give away the house, as long as you can pay $350,000 to have it moved, but time is of the essence.

"We have 45 days to find someone to take the house," Mitchell said.
