Dangerous road in Covington targeted by county

Posted: Updated:
COVINGTON, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -

The nearly quarter-mile stretch of road that runs from Brown Bridge Road to past Riverstone Parkway has been an area where people have seen a lot of accidents and multiple fatalities.

It is because of a recent fatality that County Engineer Tom Garrett said they have decided to install two radar speed devices to prevent more accidents.

Lt. Keith Crum with the Newton County Sheriff's Office said the signs will make drivers more aware of their speed.

"Those numbers will flash, it is an extra attention-getter for those drivers to slow down," Crum said. "We don't have enough deputies to be there all the time. So, if these signs get the public to slow down, then they would have served the same purpose as two deputies working traffic."

People who live in the neighborhood just off of Riverstone Parkway are glad the signs will go up, but think more needs to be done.

"It's a step in the right direction," resident Gary Williams said. "But, I think they need to install guard rails. They need to be on the right hand side. Since I have lived here I have seen three deaths," Williams said.

Some residents said they worry every time they come home making a left turn into their neighborhood.

"It is very dangerous," Dawn Henry said. "When I get to the house up there, I know to signal because cars aren't going to slow down so I signal way before I get to my neighborhood."

Newton County officials said the signs have been approved, but they currently do not have a timeline for when they will be installed.
