APS investigating students attending schools not in their zone

ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

With school in session, Atlanta Public Schools officials can finally see exactly how many students attend each school.

Grady High School has caught officials' attention because it is over capacity, but officials believe it shouldn't be.

The district sent a letter home to parents on Friday stating that enrollment at Grady was "higher than anticipated" and that officials are looking at several different things to find out which students are attending the school from out of zone.

"If a parent has enrolled their child using fraudulent means, we encourage that parent to withdraw their child at this time and enroll in their zoned school," the letter stated.

APS spokesman Keith Bromery said the district would look at things like mail returned to the district due to changed addresses, and students who periodically arrive late to school or stay late at school because of long-distance drop-offs and pickups.

Bromery said that if parents turn themselves in before an investigation has begun, they would not receive punishment, which could range from paying costs to the school district associated with investigating the matter to a $1,000 fine and even imprisonment.

The district also encourages others to anonymously report suspected fraudulent enrollments by e-mailing outofzone@atlanta.k12.ga.us or by calling (404) 802-3450.
