JACKSON COUNTY, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -

A 48-year-old Jackson County man was arrested on two counts of felony aggravated animal cruelty for allegedly shooting two dogs, according to the Georgia Humane Society.

The organization said that Stanley Lorenzo Sims used a rifle to shoot Max, a young boxer, and Allie, a Labrador retriever puppy, as he drove by their home on July 3.

According to a release from police, the dogs chased Sims down the road and he shot them before pulling into the owners driveway.

Sims told police he was carrying bags into the house when Allie became aggressive with him, according to reports. He said the dogs got aggressive with him three times before shooting them.

Sims told the owner he didn't recognize the dogs, otherwise he would have called him to come get them, according to police reports.

Police reports said the owner, Daniel Anderson, became combative and appeared to be intoxicated.

Anderson told police the dogs had escaped from a fenced yard.

A veterinarian's report stated that based on their injuries, it appeared that the dogs were walking or running away from Sims when they were shot.

The Georgia Humane Society said that although there was a lot of evidence that incriminated Sims, a Jackson County sheriff's deputy initially chose not to arrest him after responding to the pet owner's 911 call.

A warrant was later issued for Sims' arrest by a Jackson County Magistrate Court judge on Aug. 29.

The Jackson County District Attorney's Office then picked up the case and will prosecute Sims, according to the Georgia Humane Society.

The organization said that Max and Allie are still recuperating from their injuries but are doing OK.

A veterinarian said the two dogs will most likely suffer long-term effects, including possible amputation due to their gunshot injuries.
