ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -
With rising concerns about safety and campus crime, students at Georgia Tech launched a week-long safety campaign Tuesday.
The goal of the campaign is to increase safety education to students and promote current safety programs now in place.
"We all felt it was time for us to take action towards our own safety," said Mike Mosgrove, the Speaker of the House for the Student Government Association. "We felt the best way to do that was to have students reaching out to other students."
Educational events are planned throughout the week. They include transportation, theft, alcohol and personal safety programs.
"The whole point of this campaign is peer-to-peer education and more preventatives measure than just responsive measure," said Mosgrove.
Students told CBS Atlanta News that they do take precautions when walking on campus.
"Just don't walk around alone," said Alex Muscalus, a freshmen. "I pretty much try to avoid the less-than-friendly areas. I feel pretty safe around campus during the day."
But many are wary of walking off campus.
"As long as you're not walking around alone in the middle of the night in some of the harder parts of Atlanta, you should be fine," said Harsimran Mann, who said he has never been a victim of crime during his three years at Tech.
Organizers of safety week said they are also forming a Campus Safety Council that will include students and members from the Georgia Tech Police Department, among others.
