Tough Questions for orthodontic assistant treating patients without a license

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

A woman who used to work as an orthodontic assistant has been accused of treating dental patients in her own home, without a license.

Kessia Curtis, 33, got a visit by Rockdale County Sheriff's Office deputies on Au.18 after anonymous neighbors reported an unusual number of cars frequently being parked in front of her home, and had suspicions that she was running an illegal dental office.

A property manager for a group of rental homes, including the home that Curtis lives in, said he had heard reports of suspicious activity.

"All I heard was the calls to the office that something was going on," the man said.

She told authorities she worked as an orthodontic assistant for Strait Orthodontics in Atlanta.

When deputies went to Curtis' home, she reportedly answered the door wearing a surgical mask. After some time, deputies were allowed into her home, where she showed them dental equipment she had, which no longer exists.

But CBS Atlanta's Sonia Moghe called the number Curtis gave police and spoke to another orthodontist, who wished to remain anonymous, pending litigation.

"Come to find out - and I don't know how long she's been doing this - stealing from us, equipment and supplies, treating patients in her house," he said. "That was incredible. I'm still dumb founded by it, to be honest with you."

The orthodontist confirmed that Curtis used to work for his practice as an orthodontic assistant, but he let her go earlier this year.

"I can say she no longer works here and we're shocked and appalled that such an act was committed," he said.
