ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -
A southwest Atlanta couple showed CBS Atlanta News mold and mildew growing in their apartment, but said leasing managers have failed to help them.
Deneisha Alexander lives at Lakewood Forest Apartments on Old Hapeville Road with her partner, Martae Brooks, and two young children.
She said a water leak in a unit above her sent water gushing through her ceilings on Tuesday.
"When I woke up, I noticed that I was stepping in basically a puddle of water in the carpet," said Alexander.
Management did replace some ceiling tiles and carpet padding, but the family has noticed mold and mildew starting to grow. For days, they have asked to move to a new apartment but have had no response from the leasing office.
"They're breathing in these germs," said Alexander, who noted both her children have respiratory problems. "Anything can get into their lungs - mold, the residue, anything. I'm just concerned about my children's well-being."
CBS Atlanta News went to the leasing office to ask Tough Questions but was told the manager was not there. The man at the desk said he was just a temporary worker and knew nothing about the couple's water leak.
The manager never responded to a request to call a reporter.
"We're just asking as concerned parents to move my kids to a new unit," said Brooks.
"I want to know that my children - when they're asleep, they're sleeping peacefully and breathing healthy air," added Alexander. "Yes, yes, that's it. That's all I ask for."
