FEMA response center in Atlanta responds to Isaac

ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

FEMA's regional response center for the southeast, located in Atlanta, remained extremely busy Wednesday morning, just hours after Hurricane Isaac made landfall.

The center is responsible for coordinating relief efforts for several states in Isaac's path, including Alabama and Mississippi. It houses multiple departments under one roof such as Health and Human Services and Transportation.

By Wednesday morning, the attention had been shifted primarily to Alabama and Mississippi, the states receiving the most impact from Isaac. Louisiana, which Isaac hit hardest, is not in FEMA's southeast region.

"Preliminary assessments are being set up, teams to go out and do that, and so I think we have a good handle on it," said Kertz Hare with FEMA Logistics. "We're now in the second half of the ball game."

An estimated 60 people are working in the center, roughly 12-hour-long shifts.
