Atlanta police arrest five teens after family is beaten

ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

Atlanta police have arrested five teens in connection with a brutal attack on a family that had asked for protection from a school resource officer.

Somemet Beavers told CBS Atlanta News that her son was threatened at King Middle School and she asked the officer to protect her and her three children as they walked home.  She says he refused.

Atlanta police said Thursday that they have launched an investigation into the officer's actions.

"If there were policies and procedures violated then I'm sure disciplinary action will be taken," said Sgt. Curtis Davenport.  "But that's what investigations are for, to get to the truth."

The school district has removed the officer from the school, pending its own investigation.  It has also suspended three students at King Middle School.

"It is disruptive behavior because you are responsible for your behavior, accountable for it, both in school and outside of school," said school spokesman Keith Bromery.

Police said the teens arrested are charged with fighting but could face serious felony charges if the brawl was gang-related.
