HALL COUNTY, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -

Divers with the Hall County Sheriff's Office Search and Recovery Team will scale back a search for a missing man who drowned in Lake Lanier on Aug. 18.

Investigators said Jeffrey Nause, 44, either jumped or fell from a boat just after midnight on Saturday, near Lake Lanier Islands in Hall County.

At some point, he became distressed and went under and never resurfaced.

Boat crews used side sonar equipment to help guide dive team members in their search.

Sgt. Stephen Wilbanks told CBS Atlanta News the water depth range is anywhere from 70 to 140 feet in the search area.

The incident is being investigated as a boating accident and comes under the jurisdiction of the Department of Natural Resources.

Surface and sonar searches will continue on Thursday and Friday, but dive operations will be on stand-by pending the results of those searches.
