Grayson residents to get free trash pickup

Posted: Updated:
GRAYSON, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -

Residents in the Gwinnett County city of Grayson will no longer have to pay for trash pickup when city leaders approve a new budget.

The mayor told CBS Atlanta News that city leaders expect a new package store to generate as much as $150,000 in new revenue when it opens. He says it is only fair to give something back to residents.

Grayson residents currently pay $35 per quarter for garbage removal service. That means their savings will total $140 per year.

Voters approved the measure allowing the first package store to be built in the small city last November.  The bid was awarded to Richard Tucker who will own Grayson Beverage SuperStore.

"Who doesn't drink?" asked Rocky Rodriguez, who said he is happy to receive free garbage pickup with the revenue generated from the liquor store.  "It will generate money."

But others said while they could save money on trash removal, they don't like the idea of the revenue coming from a package store.

"I'm not for it," said Shawn Ferguson.  "I wasn't for the liquor store being here in the first place."

Hear from other residents and the Mayor of Grayson today at 4 on CBS Atlanta News.
