COBB COUNTY, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -

A fatal accident that occurred Thursday afternoon on Interstate 285 caused major traffic backups for evening commuters during rush hour.

The accident happened in the eastbound lanes of the highway, west of Interstate 75 around 4:30 p.m.

Cobb County police said one of the three vehicles involved made an improper lane change, but due to conflicting reports, they cannot determine which one.

According to the police report, a white 2006 International semi tractor-trailer, driven by Jamie Poole, 39, of Lula, GA, collided with a black 2006 Lexus GS430, driven by Mark Shorthouse, 37, of Atlanta.

The Lexus then collided with a 1997 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck driven by Enio Tejada, 50, of Lawrenceville.

Tejada's truck then overturned several times before coming to rest in the roadway, according to police.

A passenger in that truck was found dead at the scene, but his name is not being released pending notification of next of kin.

Tejada was taken to Wellstar Kennestone hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. No one else was injured.

While a spokesperson with the Georgia Department of Transportation said the highway wasn't expected to reopen until 9 p.m., it actually reopened around 7 p.m.
