Plans to end Peoplestown flooding finally revealed

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

Wednesday night, Atlanta city leaders pointed out some of the first projects already under way to help relieve flooding in Peoplestown.

A handful of neighborhood and community leaders showed up for a planned meeting with representatives from Mayor Kasim Reed's office and the watershed district.

It's one of several meeting since the early July storms that flooded homes and yards with raw sewage.

It got the attention of Reed. He even toured the area and vowed to find a way to fix the problem.

Fed up with years of flooding, residents showed up to the Wednesday night meeting with their own watershed expert and a survey of the land.

Both sides agreed storm water runoff from places like the interstate and areas around Turner Field are a big problem, but they are areas out of the city's immediate control.

City representatives pointed out areas on city property where projects just started, like an abandoned street near Rosa L. Burney Park.

It's where useless concrete was ripped out on Monday to make way for a bio-relief retention pond.

"That water will overflow and slowly flow out of that intention cell to the combine sewer," said a representative from the city. "It relieves the peak runoff."

City leaders said all of the projects are designed to limit the amount of water that could potentially make its way to Peoplestown and other low lying areas.

City leaders also said the three small projects under way should be completed by the end of the month, and that another one is expected to start next week.

Both sides agreed to work together to bring other property owners, like the Fulton County Recreational Authority, GDOT and Turner Field, on board. That would allow the city to work toward an even bigger storm water project.
