Hundreds of Gwinnett police vehicles recalled by GM

GWINNETT COUNTY, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -

Several hundred Gwinnett police patrol vehicles will be taken off the street for service, after General Motors issued a recall for all 2008 to 2012 Chevrolet Impalas.

That affects around 700 cars in the Gwinnett County police fleet.

"Most of our patrol fleet consists of those model year cars," said Corporal Jake Smith of the Gwinnett Police Department. "When we first received the notice it was concerning because it affects most of our fleet."

He said the recall should not significantly impact their day-to-day operations, as the department was able to develop a service plan that quickly takes care of the potential problems identified in those model year vehicles by General Motors. Smith also said none of the cars in the fleet have thus far shown any signs of the manufacturing defect.

General Motors said the recall stems from concerns that the vehicles' "front lower control arms may fracture."
