ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

Jurors returned guilty verdicts against a man charged with the shooting death of 48-year-old tourist.

Wanique Odwin, 29, was convicted on Monday in the death of Kashma Avery and one count of aggravated assault against Jay Abernathy, 33, who was traveling with Avery.

Police reports said Avery was shot and killed on Sept. 2, 2008 in the Shell Gas station parking lot on Spring Street in Midtown.

Avery and Abernathy were in town from Michigan. They asked for directors after getting lost.

As Avery exited his car, he was approached by Odwin who asked for a quarter and became belligerent when Avery refused to give him any money, according to court records.

At one point, Odwin pulled out a semi-automatic handgun, according to police. Abernathy attempted to grab the gun from Odwin, but he shot Avery.

Odwin was sentenced to life plus 25 years in prison by Fulton County Superior Court Judge Craig Schwall who presided over the case.
