Fulton County finally certifies election results

Posted: Updated:
FULTON COUNTY, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -

Nearly two weeks after voters cast their ballots, the Fulton County Board of Elections has declared a winner in the Democratic primary for sheriff.

Monday the Board of Elections certified results from a recount that show Fulton County Sheriff Ted Jackson beat former sheriff Richard Lankford.

Now the Board hopes to move on from the controversial July 31 election, a race that saw it come under fire for a number of problems including how votes were counted, the accuracy of ballots and the delay in turning the results over to the Secretary of State.

Rod Edmond, the Chairman of the Board, tried to explain what happened.

"The people who got the wrong ballot or the ballots that didn't include a specific House race or Senate race, it sounds like that was more of a human error.

As for the scanning of ballots and the like, that was more a machine problem," said Edmond.

Secretary of State Brian Kemp has launched an investigation into what happened and Lankford has threatened to go to court to get the entire election thrown out.

CBS Atlanta News Reporter Bernard Watson asked Edmond some Tough Questions about the situation.

"So what is going to be done to rectify this so we don't see this again in the fall or next election?" asked Watson.

"There is going to be an analysis. We are bringing some consultants in to find out what happened and once we find out what happened we are going to let the public know," Edmond said.
