ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -
In the past few weeks, severe storms have brought with them lots of thunder and lightning, and in many cases, homes have been struck by that lightning.
But Regan Cortes, a specialist at Labeled Lightning Protection who spoke with CBS Atlanta News on Friday, said that direct hits to your home can be prevented.
"Lightning strikes are the one force of Mother Nature that you can protect yourself from," Cortes said.
Lightning protection systems are becoming more and more popular. Experts attach a grounding cable to lightning rods along the roof of your home, and if lightning strikes your home, the rods divert the electricity into the ground.
"If you have a properly installed system, it could hit the rod and run to (the) ground and you would never even know it," Cortes said.
The systems cost upwards of $1,800, but Cortes said it's worth the money for the piece of mind it brings.
