ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

Melynda Stylistik could not believe what came out of her kitchen faucet this week.

"I almost drank that water," Stylistik said. "It was like brown stuff coming out and it was like orange Kool-Aid. I was like, 'What is going on, oh my God!' I almost drank this and I was going to give it to my dog."

Stylistik said she's lived in Atlanta for about 15 years and has never seen anything like it.

"I usually live in Buckhead or Midtown, but now I've tried the Old Fourth Ward and I see that my water is old too," Stylistik said.

Ray Ellis lives up the street and has encountered the same problem.

"It's me, my wife and my dog and none of us are drinking the water," Ellis said.

CBS Atlanta News first exposed Ellis' dirty water problem last year.

"See how brown that is? Isn't that great?" Ellis asked.

CBS Atlanta News learned that the Atlanta Department of Watershed Management has plans to address the issue.

Watershed management will begin replacing old water mains at more than 50 locations this month. The upgrades will improve water quality in the Old Fourth Ward, Candler Park and Poncey-Highland neighborhoods.

"I think it's a good thing to do because we can't go on another hundred years with disgusting water and dirty pipes," Stylistik said.

Officials with the Atlanta Department of Watershed Management said they will begin construction on the new water mains in about two weeks.

The areas up first are Auburn Avenue, Clifton Road, Jackson Street and Willoughby Way.
