APD officers to begin carrying Tasers

ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

In a matter of weeks, some Atlanta police officers will have a new tool.

The new tool is a Taser, and soon 400 officers will use carry them every day on the streets.

Police told CBS Atlanta News that the non-lethal devices will help protect citizens and officers.

Most people have seen videos of Tasers being used by police officers in questionable ways, but Atlanta Police Chief George Turner said that won't be the case in the Atlanta.

Turner said that in violent situations, studies show that in situations where officers were equipped with stun guns, their suspects received serious injuries less than 1 percent time.

"Normally, what would happen in that situation, the officer would have to go hands-on and get in a physical altercation, ultimately putting the officer in place where he could be injured, as well as the individual receiving injuries," Turner said.

CBS Atlanta News had Tough Questions about how Atlanta Police Administration will prevent officers from acting inappropriately with the devices.

"Every deployment of that will be recorded. There is no way the officer will be able to discontinue that recording," Turner said.

\Turner said he believes it will take three years before the entire police force will carry Tasers.
