FULTON COUNTY, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -
A former Fulton County employee said she was fired because county officials made a mistake when they hired her.
Donna Tucker worked as an instructor at the Department of Health and Human Services' South Training Center. She helped developmentally disabled adults learn life skills.
Tucker was hired in mid-July then told three weeks later that the county made a mistake.
"I was stunned," Tucker told CBS Atlanta News. "I was in disbelief. I said 'you what?'"
Tucker received a letter from the Director of Health Services, Patrice Harris, that said: "Due to an error with the hiring process it is with deep regret for me to inform you of your separation from employment with Fulton County."
The letter went on to say that Tucker was not the highest-rated employee and should not have been given the job.
"The lady said it wasn't the fact I wasn't qualified,"said Tucker. "It was the fact that I didn't score high enough. That's your error. That's human resources' problem. That's not my problem."
CBS Atlanta News contacted Fulton County officials who said they would investigate whether proper procedure was followed.
Tucker said she would like severance pay or for the county to find her a new job.
"Compensate me so I can make arrangements," said Tucker. "You just don't tell somebody that you can't a job have anymore. They haven't done anything and they've got bills and stuff to pay. That's ridiculous."
