ALPHARETTA, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -
People who plant signs along roadways and in the median call it advertising, but many people in Alpharetta describe it a different way.
"It's trashy especially when signs get wet, they start to deteriorate a little bit. It just doesn't look that good," said Jimmy Wilson, a frequent visitor to Alpharetta.
Placing the signs in the right away and in the median is also illegal. Alpharetta code enforcement officers say they are engaged in a game of cat and mouse with the purveyors of those illegal signs.
"Because we don't work on the weekends people have picked up on that so they tend to put out their improper signs on Friday evening," said Paul Ivey, with Alpharetta Code Enforcement.
Officials say the signs not only look bad they also make it hard for drivers to see, and officials say the problem is getting worse .
"Monday morning a big job is pulling up the signs. We pulled up about 4,700 in 2011. So far this year we have pulled up 2,400," said Ivey.
To combat the problem, code enforcement is stepping up its patrol. Starting Aug, 25, officers will start working weekends.
"We'll contact the people putting out the signs and advise them of the law and if they continue to violate that they are subject to receiving a citation or a summons to the code enforcement board or to the city court," Ivey said.
