Ex-Ala. gov. apologizes at resentencing hearing

MONTGOMERY, AL (AP) -

Ex-Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman is apologizing for any embarrassment his bribery conviction may have caused.

In a quiet voice, the 66-year-old Siegelman told a judge during his resentencing hearing Friday that he "deeply regrets" the things he has done.

Federal judge Mark Fuller sentenced Siegelman to 6 1/2 years for his conviction on bribery and other charges.

Siegelman and former HealthSouth chief Richard Scrushy were convicted in 2006. Prosecutors say they arranged $500,000 in contributions to the Democrat's campaign for a state lottery in exchange for the governor appointing Scrushy to an important hospital regulatory board.

The judge said the case has been hard on everyone.
