Anti-T-SPLOST group
ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -
A group of Georgians who don't want to see the transportation referendum pass on Tuesday rallied at the state Capitol on Monday.
Members of an organization called the Transportation Leadership Coalition hope their message about the Transportation Special Purpose Local-Option Sales or TSPLOST resonates louder than the one of those supporting it.
"I'm voting against T-SPLOST and I'm urging everybody to vote against T-SPLOST. We don't want $8 billion taken out of our wallets for a plan that is going to provide almost no traffic relief," Steve Brown said.
Coalition members like Viola Davis don't like the idea of paying an additional 1-cent sales tax on groceries and medicine.
"This T-SPLOST is going to increase the tax on food by 1 percent. In DeKalb County, in less than a two to three-year span, our tax on food will go up 2 percent," Davis said.
Davis agreed there is a traffic problem in the region, but she doesn't believe the current referendum will help fix it.
"Let's face it, they've been promising to straighten out this traffic for over 10 years and have yet to get it right. This is not the plan that's going to get it right either," Davis said. "This is not a solution we need to go back to the table and get it right."
