DEKALB COUNTY, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -
After more than a year of planning and campaigning, the "Brookhaven Yes" group will sit back and hope for the best Tuesday as DeKalb County voters make their decision on whether to allow the formation of a new city of Brookhaven.
Those who oppose it, led by the Ashford Neighbors and "No City Brookhaven" groups, believe they have the upper hand with voters.
"People aren't dissatisfied with DeKalb County," said Jim Eyre of the "No City Brookhaven" group. "(People) moved here specifically because they wanted to be in unincorporated DeKalb County."
Their campaign has focused on convincing voters that a new city would only lead to bigger government, higher taxes and only a marginal improvement in city services.
The "Brookhaven Yes" group has argued the exact opposite.
"There's really not a downside to a city of Brookhaven," said supporter Linley Jones, citing a need for a more localized government.
"We don't have a single elected DeKalb County official who even lives in the footprint of Brookhaven. So we really don't have anyone looking out for the interests of Brookhaven."
