Stolen AC units leave apartment residents in sweltering conditions

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

Lamekia Walker said she's been living without air conditioning in the Park Vista Apartments in Southeast Atlanta for six months.

"It's unbearable, it's unbearable,"  Walker said. "It's kind of scary because I feel like my health is at risk being there in the heat like that."

Walker said her apartment heats up to over 100 degrees during the day and she's not the only one sweltering in these conditions.

"There's a bunch of them that have been stolen," resident Raymond Willis said.

Willis said his sister's a/c unit was stolen and it took several weeks before management replaced it.

"She dealt with it the best she could.  Some of the neighbors loaned her a box fan and she just dealt with it that way," Willis said.

CBS Atlanta News found multiple a/c units missing in this gated community on Friday, so we contacted the leasing office.

"I'm trying to find out what you all are doing to replace the air conditioning units in this heat?" CBS Atlanta News Reporter Adam Murphy asked.

Management told us they are aware of the problem and they're in the process of replacing the missing units.

"So there will be new A/C units put in today?" Murphy asked.

Management assured CBS Atlanta News that the problem would be corrected Friday, providing relief to residents.

"They have air in the office, why can't we have air?" Walker asked.
