Shooting scene
ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -
Atlanta police said a homeowner opened fire on two suspects as they tried to kick down his door and break in Friday morning. Both are at the hospital and police are now searching for a third suspect.
It happened at the West Highlands at Perry Boulevard subdivision just before 11 a.m.
The homeowner told police he was on the phone when he saw a van pull up and two men got out. They then began kicking the door. Police said the homeowner grabbed a gun, opened the door and shot both suspects.
"It's something that's obviously of concern," said Officer. John Chafee. "We're not sure of the motivations behind these people, if they knew someone was home at the time."
The two fled in the waiting van but then crashed a few blocks away. At least one of the suspects took off on foot but was quickly caught by police.
"For the years I've been staying out here nothing like this never happened," said neighbor Bernice Ellis. "It just really took me off of my feet."
Police said both suspects are in stable condition at Grady Memorial Hospital and will face charges. Investigators said they have no solid leads on the third suspect's whereabouts.
"I'm just shocked that it did happen. And I hope it never happens again," said Myrtic Johnson, who has lived in the area for six years.
