SWAT teams in north Fulton County merge

ROSWELL, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -

SWAT teams in Milton, Alpharetta and Roswell have merged to become one unit, made up of 47 officers, according to Roswell police.

The move consolidates resources among units that sometimes found themselves short of officers in crucial situations.

With the merging of the people and resources, officials say the SWAT team of north Fulton County will not have to worry about having a crew ready to go for an emergency situation at a moment's notice.

"Quite often we'd have to call officers in from vacation or home, and it was just difficult to get guys there as soon as possible," said Roswell SWAT officer Zac Frommer. "It was just a natural progression to join the teams to combine resources and specialty skills with the officers."

For the first time since their SWAT team began in 1985, Roswell has its own designated SWAT truck, converted from an old bread truck using a $25,000 donation from World Harvest Church, and 1,300 hours of charity labor from a church member to refurbish the interior.

That truck will join the one already in use from Alpharetta to create a centralized north Fulton SWAT service.

"We help each other out quite a bit and we work common cases, because we're so tightly packed up here in north Fulton County, there's a lot of things that we do already together," said Frommer.
