LAWRENCEVILLE, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -

On Tuesday, the Humane Society of the United States honored a pit bull from Lawrenceville.

Titan is the second runner-up for the organization's fifth annual Dogs of Valor Awards.

The awards celebrate the human-animal bond by honoring dogs who have exhibited extraordinary courage by heroically helping a person in need.

One morning in July 2011, Titan alerted John Benton to go check on his wife, who was unconscious on the floor with a bleeding head.

"He'd run up a few flights of steps and run back down just to keep me from going to let me know something was wrong," said Benton.

Doctors said that Gloria had suffered a brain aneurysm and fractured her skull — and that had John not found her then, she would probably have suffered brain damage or died.

Recently, Titan came to the rescue again when he barked to wake John up at 4:30 a.m. When John went downstairs, he found that Gloria had fallen in the bathroom, breaking her hip and another bone. Gloria continues to recover from her injuries.

HSUS Georgia senior state director Jessica DuBois presented Titan's family with a crystal scroll plaque, a sterling silver pet tag by Bella Tocca Tags and a $50 Humane Domain merchandise certificate.
