Passenger Jacqueline Culp
ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -
An Atlanta police officer and two other drivers were hospitalized Saturday after a collision at the intersection of Fairburn and Cascade roads.
Police now confirm a passenger in that crash has died.
The APD officer was running an emergency call when the crash happened just before 5 p.m. on Saturday, according to Fulton County Police Department who is investigating the crash.
Investigators said the officer was traveling westbound on Cascade Road and collided with a BMW 740i sedan traveling southbound on Fairburn Road.
The impact caused the BMW to sideswipe a Chevrolet Impala that was sitting in an eastbound lane at the red light on Cascade Road.
The police cruiser caught fire. The officer was trapped inside the car. First responders extricated the injured officer who was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital with serious injuries.
Emergency crews also extricated passenger, Jacqueline Culp, who was in the BMW.
She was taken to the Atlanta Medical Center. Atlanta Police did confirm Culp passed away because of her injuries.
The department released a statement on Monday:
"The Atlanta Police Department is aware of the unfortunate passing of the passenger of the BMW from Saturday's officer involved accident. We will continue to cooperate with the Fulton County Police Department, who is conducting the accident investigation. Our Office of Professional Standards will be conducting an internal investigation. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of the deceased".
The woman driving the Chevrolet Impala received non-life-threatening injuries. She was taken to Grady.
The Fulton County PD said it continues investigating the collision.
