HAMPTON, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -
For more than two months, Clayton County police have been searching for a man who reportedly aimed a rifle at a school bus full of children back in May.
Neighbor Codarrius R. Brewer made the report to police on May 14 and spoke with CBS Atlanta multiple times, recounting what he claimed he saw.
"I saw this guy in our neighbor's yard, laying down holding a rifle," Brewer said. "I'm chasing the guy, he ditches the rifle, he stops what he's doing and starts running. No telling what would have happened if he did what he was getting ready to do."
Police found a rifle with a scope on it in Brewer's neighbor's backyard. They also found a notebook with a list of school bus numbers, for buses that were in the Hampton and Lovejoy areas.
Throughout the week, which was the last week of school for Clayton County schools, law enforcement escorted school buses in the area to and from school. Even after school was let out, police set up a mobile police precinct in the neighborhood where the gunman was reportedly seen, to put neighbors at ease and keep an eye out.
But on Friday night, police arrested Brewer himself, and said that he admitted to making the story up.
"He also admitted to placing the rifle by the fence line and also leaving the note," Clayton County police spokesman Chris Windley said.
