FORSYTH COUNTY, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -
A 34-year-old Johns Creek man has been arrested after police said he made and ignited a homemade bomb at a Forsyth County car dealership.
Quinton Gregory Smith was charged with possession of an explosive/destructive device and criminal damage to property in the second-degree.
According to Sheriff Ted Paxton, on Monday morning, the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office responded to a call from RBM Mercedes of Atlanta-North on McFarland Parkway in south Forsyth County.
Employees arrived at work and found damage to a vehicle and damage to an area of asphalt near the vehicle, police said.
It was found that the damage was caused by a homemade bomb thrown at a vehicle in the early morning hours.
"This device was constructed to detonate on impact," said Paxton. "However, that did not happen. The device had been contained in a glass jar before it was thrown. It appears that the remains of the content of the jar were manually lit by the perpetrator. The device became hot enough to cause some damage to the car and to melt the asphalt that was near the car, but it did not ignite the car."
The device, composed of some type of flammable compound, burned itself out and never detonated.
Police said once they looked at surveillance video, they were able to identify Smith as the suspect.
Smith had just been terminated by Progressive Parking the day before, police said. The dealership contracted the company to wash cars.
"We believe his motive was revenge," stated Paxton. "However, this is still an ongoing investigation."
Smith is currently being held in the Forsyth County Detention Center without bond. His next court appearance is scheduled for August 14th.
