Cases of liquor the thieves tried to take
Thieves used sledgehammer to get in building
ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -
Atlanta police Thursday morning were searching for two men who broke into a liquor store, but left empty-handed.
An officer responding to an alarm at Bim's Package store on West Marietta Street saw the men loading a Ford Expedition with 29 cases of liquor.
One of the suspects fled by jumping down a 10-foot wall to the railroad tracks that run east and west behind the business. According to the officer, the man jumped on a train that was headed east into downtown.
The other suspect was last seen running west behind the business and then out on to West Marietta Street.
Police said the men used a sledgehammer to break into the side of the building, which appeared to be an approximately two-feet-thick brick wall.
"It's a big wall, so I don't know. They worked all night to do that," said Bee Mihrtab, the store's owner.
The SUV was left behind and is being checked to see if it is stolen.
It is estimated the value of the liquor recovered by the officer is approximately $10,000.
Mihrtab reclaimed the liquor from the vehicle after a Crime Scene Unit processed it for fingerprints.
"Luckily, we're okay; we got all our stuff back," said Mihrtab.
