ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -
Many residents at the Wheat Street Towers in downtown Atlanta said they've been living with bed bugs for months, and the property managers have not been able to do anything to fix the problem.
"The bed bugs are still winning the fight," said Benford Stellmacher, a sixth floor resident.
"Move the senior citizens to a hotel for maybe two or three days and fumigate the entire building," he said. "That's what we need."
The Wheat Street Foundation, which oversees operation of the apartment towers, said they've already spent $70,000 on pest control fees, and are about to spend even more.
However, foundation Vice President Warren Franklin said, in many cases, the bugs are the fault of residents who have not kept their clothes and belongings clean.
Stellmacher admitted that many residents are to blame.
"It's all of the residents' fault because we live here," he said.
Franklin said he hopes to have the building renovated at some point in the next two or three years.
