COBB COUNTY, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -
When the state completed Interstate 75 in Cobb County in 1978, it put an end to Big Shanty Road. A dead end.
At the time, the state did not see the need to build a bridge over the interstate, so it cut the road in half.
But 24 years and $26 million later, Cobb County, the Georgia Department of Transportation and the Town Center CID celebrated the road's grand reopening.
Engineers dug a tunnel under Interstate 75. Wednesday at noon, the road opened, offering a relief valve for students at Kennesaw State and for drivers who use Chastain Road and Barrett Parkway.
