HENRY COUNTY, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -

The Henry County police department and sheriff's office are holding simultaneous blood drives Wednesday to honor the memory of an 11-year-old boy.

Conor Burch, the son of Henry County Police Capt. James Burch, was hit and killed by a car while walking to his school bus in April.

His mother, Bernadette, is an assistant to the police chief in the city of Locust Grove.

Conor was a sixth grader at Locust Grove Middle School and was popular. He played baseball for the city and always had a great attitude, according to his teammates.

Roughly 800 people attended Conor's funeral. The blood drives are a way for people to continue to honor his memory.

Each year, the police department and sheriff's office host simultaneous blood drives to see who can attract the most blood donors.

"It's kind of a competitive thing," said Henry County Police Sgt. Joey Smith. "This year it's special because we're doing it in honor of Conor Burch."

The police department is hosting its blood drive at the Henry County Police Department annex training room on Zack Hinton Parkway in McDonough from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Donors at the police department will receive a free T-shirt and will be entered into a drawing for a $3,000 prize.

The sheriff's office is hosting its blood drive at 120 Henry Parkway in McDonough.
