Disabled woman found in tiny room, disgusting conditions

CARROLLTON, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -

One metro county sheriff's office made a startling discovery - a disabled woman living in a tiny room the size of a closet, covered in feces.

And what's worse, the woman's care givers were actually members of the same family.

Authorities aren't releasing the name of the woman they found in deplorable conditions nearly a week ago, but a neighbor claims the smell at her home was so bad that deputies had to run out to vomit before they could save the disabled woman.

"When the sheriff went in there, they ran back out because they threw up," said neighbor Veronica Nichols, who witnessed officers investigating.

Brenda Edgens, 53, and Peggy Sanford, 52, were supposed to be taking care of another woman, an unidentified 57-year-old disabled woman when sheriff's deputies made the awful discovery.

"They didn't seem like bad people at all, you know they waved but they've never spoken to me or anything," Nichols said.

Deputies were trying to serve an arrest warrant for someone at the Carrollton home last Tuesday when they made the discovery. Instead, they found the disabled woman inside a room barely larger than a closet and she was covered in feces.

"It took them kicking in a door to even find her in that condition, Could only imagine how long she was in there," Nichols said.

Nichols said she saw the whole thing happen - she also said all three women are sisters and can't believe they would treat their family members like that.

"They told me she had a stroke, that she had a stroke and she needed to be cared for," Nichols said.

The disabled woman was taken to a local hospital for treatment. Edgens and Sanford were both released from jail Monday on $2,500 bond each.
