CBS Atlanta tracks down blighted property owner in Adamsville

ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

CBS Atlanta News searched for the owner of a blighted property at 3982 Rutgers Dr. in Southwest Atlanta.

Residents in the Adamsville neighborhood started complaining about the eyesore last month. CBS Atlanta News tracked down property owner Oneal Harris on Monday.

"I wish to rebuild that house," Harris said.

Atlanta Police said they issued a warrant for Harris last week after he failed to show up in court.

"I don't know anymore what I'm going to do today, than I did when it burned down," Harris said.

Harris said the home burned down a few years ago while his daughter was living in it. Since then, he said his health has declined and financially he has been unable to maintain the property. He also said he's asked the city to demolish it.

"Well what are we supposed to do, just look at it?" neighbor Ann Chambliss asked.

Chambliss lives near the property and has been looking at it for years.

"I'm still pretty upset about it. If he asked the city to tear it down, I would hope that the city would do it for him since he's disabled and all that, but I do have to look at it every day and I don't know how many years I've been looking at it, but you get so sick and tired of it," Chambliss said.

It's not the only eyesore in the neighborhood; city leaders said they plan to clean and board up the home at 4000 Adamsville Dr. sometime this month.

"If that community had helped me find someone that would lend me the money, it would have already been done," Harris said.

A code enforcement spokesperson with the city of Atlanta said Harris is scheduled to be in court again tomorrow at 8 a.m. to address the issue.
