Edward Crowell is the president and CEO of the Georgia Motor Trucking Association. He says trucking companies have a responsibility to make sure their trucks are safe.
"Trucking companies should be having regular preventative maintenance on their vehicles, that includes engines, braking systems, lights, every facet of the vehicle," said Crowell.
According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, CW Transport needs to improve on its maintenance checks and driver safety.
Wednesday, a piece from a CW truck's transmission broke off and hit a passing car.
Investigators said the part broke through the windshield of the SUV, killing 8-year-old Cameron Mcilwain and injuring his mother and sister.
Federal safety officials said the company has a worse maintenance record than 94.6 percent of the companies that are of similar size. Its trucks have been cited for loose or missing wheel fasteners, missing or defective axle parts and for failing to secure brake hoses or tubing against mechanical damage.
"It bears further investigation, there is no doubt about it. When you see things above the average, you want to look further and see what is going on," Crowell said.
The safety records also indicate CW drivers ranked worse that 67.5 percent of similar sized companies when it comes to unsafe driving.
"So if I am a truck owner or maintenance person, I need to start looking at how I do maintenance and start working on it. If I am the truck owner, I need to start banging some heads and tell people it's unacceptable," Crowell said.
CBS Atlanta News reporter Bernard Watson went to the headquarters of CW Transport to ask tough questions about the safety of its trucks, but the person who answered the door at the company's headquarters refused to speak to him.
An attorney representing the company released a statement that said, "CW Transport is actively investigating the cause of the accident. Our deepest sympathies go out to all those that are affected and their families."
Crowell said despite the safety findings, it's too soon to jump to conclusions about who or what is to blame for the accident.
"It could be something about maintenance you just don't know at this point. You got to finish the investigation to see if there is anything to learn from it," said Crowell.
