Ever since the racy 50 Shades of Grey book trilogy has made bestseller lists, a sugar daddy-dating website claims the books have caused a spike in its membership.
The site, SeekingArrangement.com, is meant to hook up older rich men with younger girls, many of them college students. In fact, Georgia State University has one of highest number of students with profiles on the site across the nation.
The site's founder, Brandon Wade, said membership jumped from 900,000 users to 1.6 million since 50 Shades of Grey grew more popular. And he said the number of people in Atlanta who mention the book or its characters is surprising.
"Eight thousand, three hundred and ninety one, that's actually the number of women who signed up who told us they are here because they want to find a 50 Shades type of relationship," Wade said.
The book focuses on a relationship between 27-year-old Christian Grey and 21-year-old Anastasia Steele. Grey proposes a dominant-submissive relationship contract to Steele, and showers her with expensive gifts. But reader Jedia Bramwell said she does not believe Steele seeks out Grey to be a sugar daddy.
"She did it because she loved him, she never wanted his money in the beginning anyway," Bramwell said.
But others like Regina Holloway said she believes the book has inspired more women to be honest about the financial standards they have in men.
"I think the book was an eye opener, hey, if I'm going to be dating someone, especially someone older, make sure he has plenty of money," Holloway said.
