ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -
An Atlanta police officer stopped a robbery in progress the Family Dollar on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive SW on Monday.
Officer Kevin Stroner was two blocks away from the Family Dollar when he received the call.
When the officer arrived on scene he entered the Family Dollar to investigate the situation.
The suspect, Joshua Hammond, 23, was still armed inside the store.
Stroner said he came face-to-face with Hammond, who kept running to the back of the Family Dollar.
Hammond was eventually cornered by Stroner in the back of the store. Hammond surrendered and the officer confiscated the loaded, black .380 semiautomatic handgun.
Hammond also let go of a bag containing hundreds of dollars in cash, according to reports.
Hammond was charged with armed robbery, two counts of aggravated assault and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
