Police warn customers about utility payment scam

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

Newnan Utilities is alerting customers about a scam that promises to pay utility bills in exchange for personal information.

This scam has been reported across the country.

It claims that the Obama Administration is providing credits or applying payments to utility bills using your Social Security numbers.

The thieves persuade victims that this is a special federal government assistance program.

Victims are given bank account and routing numbers to use when paying their bills online, but only after they "register" by surrendering their Social Security numbers and other personal information.

If you believe you have been a victim of this scam or suspect your identity has been stolen, contact your local law enforcement agency.
