Budget reversal saves Georgia National Guard jobs

WARNER ROBINS, GA (AP) -

Some Georgia National Guard members who were told their positions would be eliminated are now learning that their jobs are safe.

Military officials say the 22 airmen in the 116th Air Control Wing in Warner Robins had already been notified of their terminations.

Brig. Gen. William Welsh, the 116th commander, tells The Telegraph newspaper that a budget decision has been reversed and the positions won't be cut.

Welsh said the reversal came after an extensive effort by Air National Guard leaders across the nation, who urged members of Congress to reverse the cuts.

Those cuts would have eliminated 5,100 Air National Guard troops nationwide.

A total of 50 jobs in Georgia will be saved under the reversal, including 26 jobs at an Air National Guard unit in Savannah.
