FULTON COUNTY, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -
The driver of a tractor trailer truck that lost mechanical parts - which the Georgia State Patrol said killed an 8-year-old boy and injured two others - is speaking about what he calls an accident.
David Washington, 52, said that he has been crying all morning because of what happened. Washington said he had no idea anything was wrong with his truck and is sorry for what happened to the victims.
The accident happened after 6:30 p.m. Wednesday on Interstate 20 near Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.
GSP said mechanical parts from the transmission came off of the truck, which was going eastbound, went over the wall and hit a Chevrolet Trailblazer going westbound.
One piece of the debris struck the windshield of the Trailblazer. The piece went through the windshield, struck the driver in the arm and then struck and killed 8-year-old Cameron McIlwain, according to GSP. The driver was able to control her vehicle and come to a stop near the median wall.
The driver, Jameka Nicole Malone, 29, also from Decatur, was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital. Malone's arm was amputated below the elbow in the crash, according to GSP.
GSP said 19-month-old Kanary Malone was in the back seat of the vehicle and was treated for minor cuts from glass.
Washington did not leave the scene. He was driving for CW Transport.
Any charges in connection with the crash are pending until the investigation is complete.
Eastbound and westbound lanes of I-20 were shut down near downtown Atlanta for hours while crews worked to clear the accident.
