ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -
The 24-year-old Snellville woman who had her left leg, right foot and both hands amputated after contracting necrotizing fasciitis will be fitted with test sockets for her prosthetics on Wednesday.
Aimee Copeland fell from a broken zip-line over a west Georgia river on May 1 and spent 59 days in an Augusta hospital before being transferred to a rehabilitation center.
Her father, Andy Copeland, has been keeping a blog about his daughter's condition and her progress throughout the ordeal.
"Aimee's knocking it out in rehab. I sat with her today, watching her determined effort as she exerted herself through her exercise regimen," Andy Copeland wrote. "Her face was red and the vein in her neck was bulging as she pressed herself into her repetitions with serious determination. It's like she was training for the Olympics."
Executives with Pulte Homes of Bloomfield Hills, Mich. said its workers and partners are volunteering to construct a two-story 1,956-square-feet addition to Copeland's suburban Atlanta home.
Aimee will come home to a new addition her father is calling, "Aimee's Wing."
The two-story space features a new bedroom, fitness room for rehabilitation, the new Pulte Planning Center – an open room with accessibility and views to Aimee's main space, and will be her study area for her continued education in psychology – and an elevator to access other parts of the home, such as the kitchen.
Pulte Homes, along with at least 30 trade partners who have volunteered for the project, are donating their time, expertise and materials to ensure that the home renovation is completed at no cost to the family and prior to Aimee's return from rehabilitation.
"Aimee's story and recovery has inspired many of us here at Pulte, and we were compelled to find a way to help," said Stephen Haines, vice president of sales for Pulte Homes in Georgia. "It is our honor to be a part of this generous community that has rallied together to help improve Aimee's quality of life, and build Aimee's Wing."
